Transforming the Smart Energy Lab with Spray Foam Australia

At Spray Foam Australia, we pride ourselves on providing effective, innovative insulation solutions for all types of spaces. Our most recent project was a unique and exciting collaboration with Glen Morris, founder of the Smart Energy Lab and well-known YouTuber. Glen has been producing educational content on renewable energy for over a decade, operating from his carpentry shed in Alpine Victoria. However, his studio space was in desperate need of an upgrade, that’s where we came in.

The Challenge: Uninsulated, Cold, and Noisy

Glen’s studio, while functional, was built as a carpentry shed with no thermal insulation. With a bare tin roof overhead, the space was freezing during the winter months, and as Glen puts it, the tin roof reflected a lot of sound — not ideal for a recording studio. The lack of insulation not only made the space uncomfortable, but it also led to excessive energy consumption as Glen had to rely heavily on a fireplace to keep warm during the harsh Alpine winters. In fact, Glen estimates that he spent around $1,000 last winter alone just to keep his studio warm.

On top of the thermal challenges, the space wasn’t acoustically suited for video production. The tin roof caused echoing, making it difficult to record high-quality sound for his YouTube channel. Glen needed a solution that would solve both the thermal and acoustic issues in his studio, and he found that solution with Spray Foam Australia.

The Solution: Spray Foam Insulation

After discussing the specific needs of the space with Glen, we decided to install our premium spray foam insulation to tackle both the temperature and soundproofing problems. Spray foam insulation is known for its superior thermal properties, and its ability to provide excellent sound absorption made it the perfect choice for Glen’s studio.

Our team got to work, applying spray foam to the roof. But that wasn’t all – to meet Glen’s request for a more aesthetically pleasing finish, we painted the foam black. This black finish not only looks sleek but also helps the studio absorb light, creating the ideal environment for video production.

The Transformation

The results speak for themselves. Glen now has a studio that is not only quieter but also far more energy-efficient. The spray foam insulation has created a thermal barrier that will keep the space warm in winter and cool in summer, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. Glen is looking forward to saving on fuel costs, and with the insulation in place, his fireplace will no longer have to work overtime.

In addition to the thermal benefits, the spray foam has significantly improved the acoustics of the space. With sound absorption now in place, Glen can produce content for his YouTube channel without the unwanted echo. The black finish on the foam also contributes to better light absorption, enhancing the overall look and functionality of his studio.

A Win for Sustainability

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that it aligns with Glen’s passion for sustainability. Spray foam insulation not only improves energy efficiency by reducing the need for heating, but it also helps create a more comfortable and environmentally friendly workspace.

Looking Ahead

At Spray Foam Australia, we love working on projects that make a real difference in people’s lives, and this one was particularly rewarding. Glen Morris’ studio is now a space that truly supports his work in the renewable energy space, and we’re proud to have played a part in that transformation.
